Casey Connor, Action Hero: The Tests
|
Zeke is freaked out enough now to demand that Casey take the "sniff test" again. Casey protests but ends up not having much choice. No little boy visible here.
I didn't realize how important that little sniff is to the story until I saw that the title of this scene on the DVD is "Two of Everything," which is what Casey says he's seeing. This is the same stuff that sent him over the top earlier in the movie. He can't afford to let himself get goofy at this point, but it definitely affects him.
After seeing Zeke get tossed over the top of the lockers...
...Casey makes his second not-too-bright move. But, then, he's under the influence of the drug, so maybe we can cut him some slack for...
....backing up right against the cage where just moments earlier he'd trapped alien-Stokely.
His eyes show how out-of-it he is...
...even when he starts reacting...
...to Stokely grabbing him from behind.
You know this has gotta hurt...
...when you realize how he got away! Ouch!!
Casey gathers the rest of the caffeine hits from the unconscious Zeke. Hard to tell if he has a fully-formed plan at this moment, but he's getting prepared.
I found this to be an emotionally affecting moment. This is Casey while Mary Beth describes the pain-free, fearless acceptance he could find as part of her "hive." Could be quite a tempting offer to an outcast, geeky Stephen King kid.
But when Mary Beth comes around the corner of the lockers, she sees this:
...and hears (from someplace else), what I think is Casey's greatest line in the movie: "I'd rather be afraid."
Mary Beth turns and walks away, her final words being, "We win" (referring to Invasion of the Body Snatchers). That's the last time we see her as Mary Beth. The lines are drawn and it's time for the show down!
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a classic sci-fi novel of the 1950's that was made into a classic sci-fi movie of the 1950's (and two other movies that we won't bother with). In the end, as Stokely says, "We lose." Or, from the aliens' POV, as Mary Beth says, "We win."
