Before the Fall
The interaction between Boromir and Frodo is interesting in these pictures. All the hobbits are stunned (#1), but Frodo's the only one who starts moving (#2). He's not thinking about running to Gandalf--he's on his way, fast enough to be blurred in the individual frames (#3-7). At first, Boromir's a barrier to be gotten around (#9-11). But then he becomes something else--a support? protection? a friend? Although Frodo doesn't seem conscious of it, instead of trying to get around Boromir he grips his arm tighter and tighter (#12-ff).
We don't see much of Boromir's face, but what we do see looks calm and stable--the perfect person to grab hold of. With the possible exception of Gimli, Boromir is probably the member of the Fellowship who knows Gandalf the least. It makes sense that he'd be the only one with the presence of mind, and the strength, to catch Frodo and hold him back.
The "Noooo" shot is a pretty familiar one, but it's the point right before it that I find heartstopping--the moment when Frodo knows what's going to happen. His fear has been replaced by horror; he's no longer afraid that Gandalf's going to fall but is already living with that reality. But since it's Elijah Wood who's showing us Frodo's emotions, that expression is the culmination of a process (especially #12-17) rather than a sudden shift from "now I'm afraid" to "now I'm horrified." Cap #17 shows us the end of that process, where the emotion's stretched so tightly the "Noooo" comes as a release.
