Just a Glance
In a few moments, it'll be all about the Ring. But right now it's all about the mithril shirt, and Frodo's reaction to it.
It is a pretty thing...
...but that's not why Bilbo is giving it to him.
It's a reminder that he's going into danger.
An unusual expression, and I'm not sure what it means. Almost as if he's asking Bilbo, "Are you sure about this?"
From here on, the camera angle, head position and facial expression combine to give Frodo a very Elvish look.
A "kingly gift," and I think they both realize it.
It's an act of generosity that fits Bilbo very well - the purpose of his wealth has always been to be of practical use, rather than hoarded, especially where Frodo's concerned. And this priceless shirt has an extremely practical purpose.
To Frodo, I think, it's a reminder of danger, but also offers hope of being protected from it. And if he's anything like book-Frodo, he's learned to read Bilbo's love "between the lines," since Bilbo's never able to speak it, and that would be happening here.
(And it is a pretty thing.)
The background on this page is from the view through Bilbo's window.
