"Just a Feeling" 5
On this page, I get an echo of the "little bit of home" moment in the TTT extended edition. In fact, when I just now looked back at that page, I was surprised how much my comments there (written a year before these) match what I've said for this scene, regarding movie-Frodo's gradual realization that the trip is one way, and his efforts to hide that from Sam. The big difference is that at this point in RotK Frodo isn't trying to hide it from Sam anymore. In the TTT moment, Frodo keeps a "brave face" until he passes Sam by, his expression changing drastically when he knows Sam can't see his face anymore; in this scene, his expression before and after he passes Sam is basically the same. If I had to put a label on it, I might call it acceptance - perhaps not only of his fate, but of "Sam being Sam." (Of course, as one Seanwise-centric fan has pointed out, Sam does turn out to be right in the end.)

One more geeky comment before we leave this scene. The permanent crease beneath Elijah's eye is very visible here, and we can tell from it that the film frames haven't been flipped. But his brooch is facing the "wrong" way. So brooch direction isn't an infallible indication of whether a shot has been reversed.
