Saying Good-bye
Leo stays out of the family conference--probably a wise idea. Sarah's parents want her to leave, but she doesn't want to leave her parents, so those are the people who have to work it out.
But Leo is growing nervous about waiting.
We don't want to get so caught up with Leelee's acting that we miss the effect of Elijah's capped teeth:
Sarah's mother does one of the most intelligent things in this movie by having Sarah take the baby. Someone else's life depending on her is probably the only thing that would have gotten her to leave.
(It would be even more effective for me if I didn't have this vision of guys sitting around a table, saying, "If she's so set against leaving her parents, how do we make it believable when she changes her mind?" [Silence] "I know! We'll give the family another kid--just a baby so we won't have to add any dialogue for it, and she can carry it. She'll leave to save the baby!" "But Sarah's sixteen already with no sibs, and all of a sudden her parents have a new baby? "Hey, it happens!" "Seems a bit too, well, convenient." "No prob! We just introduce the kid in an earlier scene, so the audience doesn't realize it's a plot device!")
Even easy-going Leo has a limit to his patience. Because he left the motorbike so far away they all get to run back to it--and the fact that they're running two abreast indicates there would have been plenty of room for that little motorbike to get through.
I like the fact that Leo just does what he needs to do to get the bike going, without paying any attention to the good-bye's going on behind him. Very honestly realistic, I'd think, under the circumstances.
But sometimes you just can't avoid a hug from the mother-in-law:
"Now, you have her home by 8:00, young man!" "Yes, ma'am." "But, M-o-o-o-m-m!"
Putting on the helmet brings out the little-kid look again. This movie is very big on helmets, BTW, no matter how dire the circumstances. I'm surprised they didn't have one for the baby.
I put this screencap in just because I liked what it said about Sarah's feelings toward Leo. She still has her wedding ring on, which isn't likely if she really considered it just a "marriage of convenience." Even the way she has her hand on Leo's back is kind of nice. (Well, I worry about Leo, y'know. Don't want him to get his heart broken, especially after he's risked his life to save her.)
