Climbing for Three
No close-ups on this page, but seeing the climb up the hill is really necessary to understand Leo's reactions on the next page. Leo claws and crawls his way up the hill more than climbing it (sound familiar?). Not only is the ground uneven and the hill steep, but he's got Sarah in tow--literally.
I can think of only one way to explain the way Sarah acts in this scene, but after studying the pics I do believe it's the "real" reason for her actions and not just an excuse I came up with to make the scene work. She must be in a state of shock. Leo's thought about and planned this rescue and knows just what's happening and what he's trying to do. Sarah, OTOH, was suddenly snatched away from her parents knowing they're about to die, with no preparation and really no knowledge about what's going to happen. It seems the only way she's been able to cope so far is to check out of reality. We'll see it more on her face when we get to some close-ups, but here we can see it in her hanging back, refusing to move, even turning to look back. Leo doesn't have time at the moment to be concerned with her mental state; he has to get himself and her up the hill. Which he does, with little or no help from her.
I don't know if this was purposefully thought out during casting, but Elijah and Leelee make a good couple for this scene (in some movies I assume everything that works was planned; in this movie, OTOH...). A tallish, strong, well-built girl (she's not fat, but she's not an emaciated fashion model), and a guy who's more slightly-built and a little shorter. If we had a "typical" Hollywood couple here, the guy would probably just pick up the girl and carry her up the hill (maybe with her slung over his shoulder). But Leo isn't able to do that, and IMHO it's a lot more realistic this way.
