Shock and Collapse
Another example of Elijah's acting not always being "pretty," but always being real. After what Leo had to do on the previous page, it's no wonder that as soon as he gets himself and Sarah to the top of the hill, he physically caves in. In pics 1-3, he's still concentrating on what he needs to do (if nothing else, Leo's a very focused kid), but in 4 the collapse begins. Remarkably, he stays on his feet; he's probably afraid to leave Sarah standing by herself. Which is smart. If we saw Sarah's shock from a distance on the previous page, it's even more visible here. Again, that's the only explanation that seems possible. If the appearance of shock isn't purposeful, this is really bad acting, and I don't think Leelee's work generally falls into that category. I can imagine the directions here: "Okay, Leelee, Elijah's going to be next to you emoting his heart out, going through every stage of physical and mental collapse--you just stand there with a blank smile on your face." But, again, IMHO it's very real. This takes us through pic 19. There are more comments at that point.

Here we break away from Sarah and Leo for a brief shot of the baby, who's now looking up at Sarah and wanting some attention. This seems to have a profound effect on Sarah (another reason I think her fixed expression up til now is a purposeful part of the acting). In 21-24, Sarah seems to see the baby as a reminder of what's just happened. The false smile is gone, and we see some tears. But it's short-lived. By this time, Leo is somewhat recovered and is watching the explosion of the Wolf section of Wolf-Biederman. Sarah follows his gaze, and in doing so seems to drop her contact with reality again. (On a personal level, I was glad to see this shot of the baby. By the time we got to the top of the hill, I was afraid--from the appearance of the "stand in" that Leelee was carrying--that on top of everything else, Sarah was going to have to deal with the guilt of breaking the baby's neck! So I'm glad we get confirmation that the kid made it.)

This next frame is here just because I love how it shows the two of them, with Leo still acting very much as the protector. What a guy...
