Wide-Screen Sword Fall
Besides perfectly fitting the situation, this has to be the most beautiful, elegant (in both the aesthetic and scientific senses of the word) dropping of something I've ever seen.
The main point is, of course, to show how totally spent Frodo is after he battles the Ring over Sam's life.
The expression on his face doesn't leave much doubt.

But the way he drops Sting says it all. He doesn't actually do anything--doesn't throw the sword or actively drop it--so it's not that he's in any way "rejecting" the sword. His grip simply loosens and it falls.

And then, in what seems like a delayed reaction, his fingers close back up again as if the sword's still there (a great detail).

And a huge sigh, as if his body's collapsing.
