Osgiliath: Leaving
Is there some frame-flipping going on here? Seems to me the "primary smudge" on Frodo's cheek changes sides for one shot. The only time I can get a fix on the permanent skin crease is while Frodo's standing facing Sam; then it seems to be on the side of his face opposite the smudge. (Not that there isn't anything else going on here!)

The first two caps are from just after the sword fall: "I can't do this, Sam." I don't think Sam understands how hard a fight Frodo just won to keep him alive (although we can certainly see it in his face). Is he worrying about what might happen the next time, when he could be even weaker?
A complete change of angle here. Frodo's breathing shows how utterly spent he is, and without the bridge overshadowing him so much we see that deathly paleness that he always has after an encounter with a Nazgul.
It looks to me as if these are tears from sheer exhaustion more than from emotion (although there's probably some of that involved, too). I've been tired enough for that on occasion, and Frodo certainly has more cause than I've ever had.
"What are we holding onto?" IMO, that's a plea for support, not a question that Frodo doesn't know the answer to. And Sam gives the support by answering the question. I think this is one time their mismatched communication styles actually work together.
Frodo's returning to himself. His intense eye contact with Sam looks as if he's soaking up all the support Sam's giving him, even though what he's receiving is a bit different from what Sam thinks he's sending. Sam isn't telling him anything new, but he's helping him really "return to himself" and get his own will acting again.
This isn't quite a jaw-setting, but it gives the same message while also showing that Frodo's wearier now than he was at the end of FotR.
If my suspicions about the flipping are correct, the following set of pics would be reversed, putting the "primary smudge" on Frodo's other cheek. And, oops, look there--Frodo's brooch is now pointing the other way. (Geeky?! Who're you callin' geeky?)
Faramir's, "Then it is forfeit."
Immediately after Faramir puts his life on the line for the quest:
If there's a movie equivalent of Frodo falling unconscious into Faramir's arms, I think it's seen in the next four pics. Frodo's collapse into relief is palpable. (But, as some visitors have pointed out since I first posted these, Frodo also has to deal with the fact that there's now another person whose death he might become responsible for.)
Saying thank you and farewell in the sewers (extended edition only):
(Note: I've lightened the next cap a bit; in the original, it's as dark as the previous two.)
Another look at an ongoing mystery. If your monitor is like mine, you're now seeing the bottom half of Frodo's face, from about the middle of his nose on down (if not, you can scroll to that point). The wig is not a factor here. He's not talking, so he's not needing to "get his mouth around" any British pronunciation. But if you're seeing it the same way I am... This is the bottom half of Frodo's face, but it's not the bottom half of Elijah Wood's face. How does he do that? I still think it has something to do with the way he holds his mouth, changing the shape of it somewhat. More pulled in toward the center than Elijah's mouth is, perhaps? But even if that's a piece of the puzzle, it can't be the entire answer... Can it?
