Osgiliath: "They're Here"
This is a sequence I've wanted to look at for a long time. Frodo's progressively falling under the combined power of the Ring and the Nazgul.
First is fear--he knows something bad is happening to him.
Then the "loss of audio" effect, which I thought was well-echoed by Sam when he has the Ring in Cirith Ungol.
Slipping out of control...
"They're here. They've come." I've never been able to quite put a label on what Frodo's face and voice do here; I just know it chills me through. Possibly the final moments he's able to communicate anything as Frodo? Or is the Ring already in charge, announcing "Their" arrival? Does part of the strangeness of the tone of voice come from it being a bit of both?
One of the few times Frolijah gets good use out of that asymmetrically curled lip:
Even though this doesn't seem to be a completely dead hobbit picture, it is reminiscent of the shot during the Nazgul flyover in the Dead Marshes, which is... a dead hobbit picture, that is.
Frodo as a zombie--the Ring in control, taking him out to meet the Nazgul. At this point, we don't see any interior struggle going on, but that doesn't mean it's absent. We're not given any sign of Frodo's emotion, but neither do we see the Ring's emotion, as we do later.
Right through the midst of the battle without taking any notice of it...
