Sin City [R] [2005]
Overall movie: **** [for adults only, and not for all of them]
EJW content: Although a featured character in one of the storylines, the fact that there are three storylines (one of them told in two parts) means he doesn't have a lot of screentime. Slick martial arts action, gruesome violence, creepy little smile, no words; just what the character should be.
Sin City was directed by Robert Rodriguez ( The Faculty; Spy Kids movies) and is based on graphic novels by Frank Miller, who also co-directed. The movie has three related but separate storylines, and Elijah's character is featured in one of them. (He also appears onscreen for just a moment in one of the other stories.) For those who've been wanting to see Elijah play a villain, you can't get much "better" than Kevin.
This movie drew media attention mostly for its attempt to transfer the graphic novels to the screen with the same look they have on the page. I've read the first parts of two of the books, and judging from those pages the movie does a superb job of meeting its goal. Especially effective with Kevin and his martial arts fighting (wire-work for Elijah) are the shots that are stark black and white--not graytone, but literally black and white.
Definitely a "hard" R. The stories themselves are film noir taken to the nth degree. The "hero" might be a cop, but might just as easily be a convicted murderer or a prostitute who enjoys mowing people down with a gun. Interesting but unsettling moral riffs abound. The stylized look of the violence makes it not as upsetting as it could be, but it's ubiquitous and gruesome (and sometimes creative). Plenty of female nudity, although a lot of that is also stylized.
This isn't my kind of movie. I don't plan to see it again in the theater--once was enough--but I'm looking forward to the DVD so I can watch Kevin's fighting style without having to watch everything else along with it. But for the kind of movie it is, it's well done and an amazing accomplishment, which is why I gave it the four stars that I did. It deserves the kind of attention it's gotten.

The "first" DVD is now available, with an expanded version tracked for December 2005.
The soundtrack has also been released. Try it if you like film noir jazz. If you're not sure, you can listen to excerpts at Amazon.
Also some technology that's new to me (which isn't saying much): UMD Mini for PlayStation Portable; if you're interested in this format, be aware that it's an unrated version of the movie, rather than one with the theatrical version's R rating.

The movie is based on three Sin City graphic novels by Frank Miller. And "graphic" doesn't describe just the format. Elijah's character is featured in the first Sin City book below, The Hard Goodbye. All three books have been released in new editions because of the movie.
Sin City: the Making of the Movie (second row, below) is now available, and has several pages of Elijah pictures and quotes.
