First Mumblijah Scene
For this batch of screencaps, I was going to pick out the frames where Mumble is most recognizable as Elijah. But there are so many of those, even from my "on-the-fly" screencapping while watching the movie, I've stuck to his first scene.
This frame is obviously not Mumblijah, but it's right before the switch and sets up the development.
Happy Feet's equivalent of "The Money Shot" - Our first glimpse of Mumble as played (not just voiced) by Elijah Wood.
The animators have given Mumble the necessary "equipment" for micro-expressions, especially the muscles around the eyes. The amount of detail in this close-up shows what high quality the DVD has, to say nothing of the animation. Looking at this, it's not hard to believe the director's statement that Mumble has nine million feathers.
We don't even need close-ups: This little head tilt is a dead giveaway.
...and the first of what I swear are a number of - yes - half-blinks!! These will, of course, take frame-by-frame study to be sure they aren't full blinks. http://www.frodolivesin.us/ejwglossary.htm
Innocently naive but courageous, Mumble leaves for his first fishing trip. I do think the animators cheat a bit on Mumble's expressiveness in allowing the corners of his mouth to show the hint of a smile. But the expression is pure Elijah. The more I look at it, the more I see him - not only in the slight smile and the eyes, but also the head position - and I'd probably see more if I had the time:
I've resisted the urge to post comparison shots, but since that's really the only reason to show this particular screencap:
But after work I was going through the screencaps again and just had to add this one from later in the movie:
Now I have to get this page published and head to work.
In the meantime:
